24  DEPARTMENT OF PURE AND INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

General Entry Requirements for all programmes:

Candidates must have five O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology

(i)  Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry (PGDC)

Candidates with at least a Third Class Degree with a CGPA of not less than 1.50 on a 5-point scale can apply. Candidates with HND certificates are not eligible for the PGDC programmes.

(ii)   M.Sc, Ph.D in Pure & Industrial Chemistry in the following areas:
          (a)    Analytical Chemistry
          (b)    Inorganic Chemistry
          (c)    Physical Chemistry
          (d)   Organic Chemistry
          (e)    Environmental Chemistry
          (f)    Pharmaceutical/Medicinal Chemistry
          (g)   Petroleum Chemistry and Petrochemicals
           (h)   Mineral Processing and Chemical Metallurgy
   (i)    Polymer Science/Technology

Requirements for M.Sc in Pure & Industrial Chemistry:

Candidates must have a B.Sc in Pure and Industrial Chemistry with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or a PGDC with at least a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

Requirements for Ph.D in Pure & Industrial Chemistry:

Candidates must have an M.Sc Degree in Pure and Industrial Chemistry with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a 5-point scale in addition to the other Faculty requirements

25.  DEPARTMENT OF PLANT SCIENCE AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

(i)    Postgraduate Diploma Programme in the following options
       (a)   Biosystematics/Plant Taxonomy
       (b)   Genetics and Breeding
       (c)   Environmental Plant Science
      (d)   Herbarium Management
       (e)   Biotechnology
      (f)   Ethnobotany and Phytomedicine

Requirements for PGD Plant Science and Biotechnology:

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Lower Degree (22) or a strong Third Class (3rd) Bachelors’ Degree in Botany/Plant Science, or any good Honours Degree in Microbiology, Agriculture, Crop Science, Biochemistry, Genetics, Biotechnology or related field (depending on the option of the PGD) from the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University within or outside Nigeria. Potential Candidates with HND in relevant fields deemed suitable by the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology’s Graduate Board of Studies would be considered for the requisite programmes.

(ii)   M.Sc, Ph.D in the following areas
(a)   Plant Physiology
(b)   Mycology and Plant Pathology
(c)  Plant Ecology
(d)  Plant Biosystematics and Taxonomy

26.  DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

       (i)   Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology (PGDM)
      (ii)   M.Sc in Industrial Microbiology
      (iii)  M.Sc in Environmental Microbiology and Bioremediation
      (iv)  M.Sc in Food Microbiology
      (v)   M.Sc in Pathogenic Microbiology & Biotechnology

General Entry Requirements for all the Programmes:

Candidates must have 5 O’level credits in not more than two sittings in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English Language

(i)  Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology

Entry Requirements for PGDM:

Candidates must have at least a Third Class  B.Sc Degree in Microbiology with a CGPA of at least 1.50 – 2.99 on a 5-point scale, B.Sc in relevant disciplines e.g. Biochemistry, Plant Science & Biotechnology, Animal & Environmental Biology, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology Technology and Biomedical Technology.

(ii)  Master of Science (M.Sc) in the following areas
(a) Environmental Microbiology & Bioremediation
(b) Industrial Microbiology
(c) Food Microbiology

Entry Requirements for M.Sc:

Candidates must have a B.Sc Degree in Microbiology with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale and a minimum of 3.50 on a 5-point scale in a Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology.

Admission Requirements for M.Sc in Pathogenic Microbiology & Biotechnology

Admission into the M.Sc programme in Pathogenic Microbiology and Biotechnology shall be open to the following categories of applicant:

B.Sc Degree in Microbiology from any reputable university with a CGPA not less than 3.00 in a 5-point scale.
B.Sc in a related discipline including Biotechnology, Pharmacy, and Medicine with a CGPA not less than 3 where applicable.
HND upper credit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology (PGDM) from the University of Port Harcourt with a CGPA not less than 3.50
(iii)  Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:
(a)  Environmental Microbiology
(b)  Food Microbiology
(c)  Industrial Microbiology
(d)  Medical Microbiology

Entry Requirements for Ph.D:

Candidates must have an M.Sc Degree in the relevant Microbiology area with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

27.  DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL & ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY

         (i)    PGD in Animal and Environmental Biology
         (ii)   M.Sc, Ph.D in the following areas:
         (a)   Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology
         (b)   Environmental Parasitology and Public Health
  (c)   Environmental Entomology & Pest Management
         (d)   Environmental Animal Physiology
         (e)   Environmental & Conservation Biology

Requirements for M.Sc in Animal & Environmental Biology:

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University in the relevant subject (e.g. Zoology, Biology, Crop Science, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Education etc. with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.

Requirements for Ph.D in Animal & Environmental Biology:

Candidates for the Ph.D programme must have a Master’s Degree and should normally have an average of at least 60% or CGPA of 3.50 in the relevant discipline at the Masters level.

For candidates who obtained their Masters exclusively by research assessment, admission will be based on the quality of their thesis. Candidates may be required to attend a pre-admission interview session. Final selection of a candidate shall be based on his/her interview performance and other criteria.

28.  DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

Requirements for PGD in Physics:

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University.

Requirements for M.Sc in Physics:

A minimum of Second Class Lower Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 is required for M.Sc programme of the Department.

M.Sc, Ph.D in the following areas:
          (a)     Solid State Electronics
          (b)     Applied Geophysics
          (c)     Material Science
          (d)     Theoretical Physics
          (e)     Environmental Physics & Radiation Protection

Requirements for Ph.D in Physics:

Candidate must have MSc Degree in the relevant field in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.


29.  DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY

(i)   Postgraduate Diploma in Geology (PGDG)

Requirements for PGD in Geology

(i) Candidates with Bachelor’s Degree from approved universities must obtain a Third Class Degree in the relevant science disciplines as determined by the Department.

(ii) Holders of HND in relevant programmes from approved institutions with a minimum of Upper Credit may also be considered for admission.

Requirements for M.Sc in Geology

Candidates must possess a B.Sc degree or its equivalent from the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale.  Candidates with PGD in Geology must have at least a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale to qualify for admission.

Requirements for Ph.D in Geology

(i)   Candidates must obtain an M.Sc in Geology or any relevant discipline of the University of Port Harcourt or any approved University and have a CGPA of not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale or equivalently computed for scales other than 5.

(ii)  Candidates must score a minimum of 70% in a Ph.D admission interview organized by the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee.

(iii) Candidates deficient in any area in the M.Sc programme will be required to remedy the deficiency from M.Sc courses.

30.  DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS/STATISTICS

O’Level Requirements

All candidates must have five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Agricultural Science or Economics.  

(i)   Postgraduate Diploma in the following areas:
      (a)   Statistics (PGDST)
      (b)   Mathematics (PGDM)

Requirements for PGD Statistics Programme:

Candidates must be holders of the B.Sc Degree in the Sciences or related disciplines obtained from University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University.

(ii)   M.Sc, Ph.D in the following areas:
       (a)   Pure Mathematics
       (b)   Applied Mathematics
       (c)   Mathematics/Mathematical Physics
       (d)   Statistics

Requirements for Masters Programme:

Admission to the Master’s Degree Programmes shall be as obtained in general School of Graduate Studies requirements for admission into the M.Sc Programme

Requirements for Ph.D Programme:

(i) Candidates should have obtained an M.Sc Degree in Mathematics of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University and have a CGPA of not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale.

(ii) Scored a minimum of 60% in a Ph.D admission interview.


31.  DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

General Admission Requirements

All candidates must have five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics and three other related science subjects preferably Physics, Chemistry and Biology at O’level.

(i)    Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science (PGDCS)

Requirements for PGDCS in Computer Science

Candidates with 3rd Class Degree from an approved university with a minimum CGPA of 1.50 on a 5-point scale may be considered for admission. Holders of HND in relevant programmes from approved institutions with at least an upper credit in the sciences or related disciplines may also be considered for admission.

(ii)    M.Sc in Computer Science

Requirements for M.Sc in Computer Science

Candidates with Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering from an approved University must obtain a minimum of second class lower division with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale. Candidates with PGD in Computer Science must have a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

 

(iii)    Ph.D in Computer Science with specialization in the following areas:
        (a)   Software Engineering
        (b)   Algorithms
       (c)  Artificial Intelligence – expert systems, neutral networks, fuzzy logic, pattern recognition, etc.
       (d)     Database Systems – object databases, data mining, information retrieval, etc.
        (e)  Systems Programming
        (f)   Web Applications

Requirements for Ph.D in Computer Science:

Candidate should have a Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology with a minimum of 3.50 on a 5-point scale and a Dissertation score not lower than 60% (B). Candidates with PGD in Computer Science with at least CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale in Master’s Degree and Dissertation score not lower than 60% may be considered.


32.  SCHOOL OF SCIENCE LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY (SSLT)

O’Level Requirements

All candidates require a credit pass in English Language and Mathematics for all the courses.  However, candidates who obtained their O’Level Certificates before 2012 without a credit pass in Mathematics or any of the Science subjects but have taken a remedial course in the School of Basic Studies may be considered.

Requirements for PGD Programmme (PGD-SLT)

Candidates must have either a B.Sc, B.Tech or BSLT Degree not lower than a Third Class with minimum CGPA of at least 1.50 or HND with a minimum of Upper Credit in any of the following areas: Biochemistry/Chemistry Laboratory Technology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Medical Biochemistry, Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Pure and Applied Chemistry, Agricultural Technology, Virology Laboratory Technology, Microbiology Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Physiology, Anatomy and Pharmacology, Geology, Geology/Mining Laboratory Technology, Mining Science, Mining Engineering Technology and Mineral Resources Engineering Technology, Microbiology, Biology, Biology/Biotechnology Laboratory Technology.  Industrial Chemistry/Petrochemical Laboratory Technology, Chemical/Petroleum Laboratory Technology, Food Science Technology, and any of the Science Laboratory Technology Degree obtained from institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt.

(ii)  Master of Science Laboratory Technology (MTech) Areas of Specialization

Candidates seeking admission into MSLT in the various options must possess a B.Sc, B.Tech or BSLT with not less than CGPA of 2.40 on a 4-point scale and CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.  Candidates with HND degree must possess Upper Credit and PGD-SLT in addition to a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale in any of the Science Laboratory Technology options.

Prospective candidates must possess at least a Third Class Bachelors’ Degree with a minimum CGPA of 1.50 in related fields or HND (Upper Credit) in a relevant agricultural discipline.

Requirements for M.Sc in Crop Protection:

Candidates seeking admission into the programme must have a Bachelor of Agriculture or a Bachelor of Science in Crop Science, Horticulture,
Agronomy and Forestry or in related fields from a recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or 2.40 on a 4-point scale.

Have a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the agricultural disciplines listed above with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or Bachelor’s Degree in a related science with a CGPA of 3.00 plus a PGD in Crop and Soil Science with a minimum CGPA of 3.50.
Fulfill the general requirements as contained in the brochure of the School of Graduate Studies

Requirements for Ph.D in Crop Protection:

Hold M.Agric or M.Sc or M.Phil in Crop Protection, Entomology, Nematology, Plant Pathology or Weed Science of an approved University.
Hold a master’s Degree in the specialized areas specified with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 2.80 on a 4-point scale.
Comply with the general regulations, conditions and policies guiding graduate studies as specified by the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Port Harcourt.
Candidates must submit a short research proposal to the Head of Department, at least 2 weeks to the date of interview and present themselves at the interview.  Only candidates who score a minimum of 60% on average at the interview will be recommended for admission.

Requirements for M.Sc in Soil Science:

Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities who have obtained the approved Degree of Bachelor in related fields with at least Second Class Honours Degree, with CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or 2.50 on a 4-point scale.
Appropriate Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities with at least a lower credit pass of 3.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale.

Requirements for Ph.D in Soil Science:

Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or of other recognized Universities who have obtained an appropriate Master’s Degree for the proposed area of study with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 2.80 on a 4-point scale, provided that satisfactory research work formed part of the Master’s Degree.
Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above, and are acceptable to the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt.
Candidates from recognized Universities where grade point average (CGPA) is not given would be required to have average Master’s Degree score of 60% or above.
Qualified candidates shall present themselves for interview and score at least 60% at the interview to be recommended for admission.

Requirements for M.Sc in Crop Production:

Candidates seeking admission into the programme must:
Have a Bachelor of Agriculture or a Bachelor of Science in Crop Science, Horticulture, Agronomy and Forestry or in related fields from a recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or 2.40 on a 4-point scale.
Have a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the agricultural disciplines listed above with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or Bachelor’s Degree in a related science with a CGPA of 3.00 plus a PGD in Crop and Soil Science with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 or HND (Upper Credit) in a relevant agricultural discipline. Fulfill the general requirements as contained in the brochure of the School of Graduate Studies.

Requirements for Ph.D in Crop Production:

Requirements for PGD in Forestry & Wildlife Management:

Candidates must possess at least a second class (Lower Division) Bachelors’ Degree in Forestry or Botany, Biology, Agriculture, Biochemistry, Geology and other related disciplines obtained from any recognized University. In addition, candidates must have the matriculation requirements of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt.  Candidates with Third Class

Degree may be admitted for a terminal diploma programme (i.e.), they will not be considered for admission to pursue Master’s Degree thereafter.

Requirements for M.Sc in Forestry and M.Sc in Wildlife & Ecotourism Management:

Candidates for admission into M.Sc  programme must have a good Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry/Forest Resources Management/Wood Science or Wildlife Management. The prospective candidates must possess at least a second class (Lower Division) Bachelors’ Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.00 (on a 5-point scale) in Forestry/Forest Resources Management/Wood Science, Wildlife Management or Agriculture, and other equivalent fields obtained from any University recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt. Candidates must have full Ordinary Level Certificate with a credit level pass in English Language. In exceptional cases, candidates with Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental/Biological Science or related field who meet the above stated requirements, but have minimal deficiencies in Forestry, may be admitted. Such deficiencies through approved courses recommended by the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee will be audited.

Requirement for Ph.D in Wildlife and Ecotourism Management:

Candidates must have a good Master’s Degree in Wildlife and Ecotourism Management with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale from the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University.  In exceptional cases, candidates with Master’s Degree in Forestry, Tourism, Environmental or Biological Science who meet the above stated requirements, but have minimal deficiencies in Wildlife Management and Ecotourism, may be admitted

Requirement for Ph.D in Forestry

Candidates must have a good Master’s Degree in Forestry/Forest Resources Management/Wood Science with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale from the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University.  In exceptional cases, candidates with Master’s Degree in Environmental or Biological Science who meet the above stated requirements but have minimal deficiencies in Forestry may be admitted.
