Admission Requirements:

Generally, candidates seeking admission into graduate programmes in Animal Science in the University of Port Harcourt shall normally be graduates of the University or any other similar Institutions recognized by the University. They must possess a first Degree, preferably Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric, Animal Science option), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc, Animal Science) or in related area. The Degrees must ordinarily be registrable with the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS).

O’Level Admission Requirements:

Candidates must possess a credit pass in Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and any one of Physics, Economics or Geography at not more than two sittings.

Admission Requirements for PGD in Animal Science

(a) Minimum of 3rd Class honours Degree in Animal Science/Animal Production or related discipline with at least 1.50 CGPA.

(b) HND (Upper Credit) in Animal Science/Animal Production.

Admission Requirements for M.Sc in Animal Science:

(a) A good honours Degree in Animal Science or related discipline (of University of Port Harcourt or similar recognized institution) with a minimum of Second Class lower division with CGPA of 3.00 and above on a 5-point scale or 2.40 on a 4-point scale.

(b) HND (Upper Credit) in Animal Science/Animal Production plus PGD in Animal Science/Animal Production, with a CGPA of 3.50 in addition to satisfying the matriculation requirements of the University of Port Harcourt

Admission Requirements for Ph.D in Animal Science

Candidate must possess an M.Sc Degree in Animal Science or Animal Production of the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized accredited institutions with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

An applicant should be a graduate of University of Port Harcourt, or a graduate from any other University recognized by the Senate of University of Port Harcourt. Candidates seeking admission into the (PGD) programme in agricultural economics and extension shall possess at least a second-class lower Degree in a non-agricultural based discipline or a Third Class Degree in Agricultural Economics and Extension option. Candidates seeking admission with HND must have an upper credit pass. In addition, candidates must possess the matriculation requirements of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt.

Admission Requirements for M.Sc in Agricultural Economics

Candidates seeking admission into the Master of Science Degree programme in Agricultural Economics shall possess:

(a) A Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural economics or its related discipline with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) with a CGPA of at least 3.00 on a 5-point scale or 2.50 on a 4-point scale from any recognized University.

(b) Appropriate Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities with at least a lower credit pass of 3.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale.

Candidates seeking admission into the Master of Science Degree programme in Agricultural Extension shall possess:

(a) A Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural extension or related disciplines with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) with a CGPA of at least 3.00 on a 5-point scale or 2.40 on a 4-point scale from any recognized University.

(ii) Shortlisted candidates shall be required to submit a proposal on their intended research area of interest to the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee. Candidates shall be interviewed by the Committee and candidates who scored 60% and above will be admitted into the programme.

(vii) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Agricultural Extension

F. FACULTY OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES

37. MD/MS DEGREE PROGRAMME

(a) Candidates must be either Medical Graduates (MBBS) of the University of Port Harcourt for not less than 5 years or confirmed and experienced academic staff of the University with Medical Degree of other recognized Universities.

(b) In addition to the above, candidates must possess either a recognized professional qualification at the fellowship level or at least an M.Sc Degree of a recognized University, after the MB.BS Degree.

38. DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY

Requirements for M.Sc Programmes:

(i) Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or other Universities recognized by statute of the University of Port Harcourt with a Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Human Physiology or related discipline.

(ii) Holders of MB.BS, DVVM or BVM, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Anatomy with a CGPA of 3.50 in Postgraduate Diploma in Human Physiology.

(iii) Requirement for Ph.D Programmes: Candidates must possess an M.Sc or M.Phil Degree or its equivalent in Human Physiology in addition to the other Faculty Requirements and a CGPA of 3.50 and above.

39. DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN ANATOMY

(i) M.Sc, Ph.D in Anatomy

Requirements for M.Sc in Human Anatomy:

(a) Candidates must possess a Second Class Honours Degree with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Anatomy from the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities.

(b) Holders of good Degrees in Medicine and Surgery, Veterinary Medicine and Physiotherapy.

ii. Areas of Specialization in Ph.D Anatomy:

(a) Histochemistry and Teratology

(b) Clinical Anatomy

(d) Radiological Anatomy

Requirements for Ph.D in Anatomy:

Candidate must have MSc Degree in Anatomy with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 points on a 5-point scale or its equivalent qualification. Interviews are conducted to assess candidates before admission and final selection is based on interview performance.

40. DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY

(i) PGD in Pharmacology

Requirements for PGD in Pharmacology:

Candidates must posses a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Honours) in either Biochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Biomedical Technology, Nursing, Physiotherapy, radiography, Optometry, Medical Laboratory Science, any related Biological Science disciplines or a Third class in Pharmacology.

(ii) Master of Science (M.Sc) in the following areas:

(a) Cardiovasular Pharmacology

(b) Biochemical Pharmacology

(d) Toxicology

(e) Ethnopharmacology

(f) Chemotherapy

Requirements for M.Sc in Pharmacology:

(a) Candidates must possess a Second Class Honours Degree with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Pharmacology from the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities.

(b) Holders of good Degree in Medicine and Surgery, Veterinary Medicine,

Dentistry, Physiology and related Biomedical Science subjects.

Candidates whose background in Pharmacology is considered satisfactory, will be required to register for the Advanced Pharmacology courses, start their research projects and spend a minimum of eighteen (18) months for the programme.

(iii) Ph.D in Pharmacology:

Requirements for Ph.D in Pharmacology:

Candidates must possess an M.Sc or an M.Phil Degree or an equivalent Degree in Pharmacology in addition to the other Faculty Requirements with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

41. DEPARTMENT OF HAEMATOLOGY, BLOOD TRANSFUSION AND IMMUNOLOGY

Requirements for M.Sc in Immunology Programmes:

A minimum of five O’level credit passes including English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

The course is open to graduates of Medicine, Dentistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Nursing, Biochemistry, Molecular-Biology, Microbiology, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine and Zoology. Candidates who hold a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale in any of the above-mentioned courses, from the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities shall be eligible for admission into the programme (except for the Medical, Dental and Pharmacy graduates whose Degrees are unclassified).

G. FACULTY OF CLINICAL SCIENCES

42. M.Sc Sports Medicine

(a) For medically qualified persons with MB.BS, B.Ch or a fellowship in any Medical discipline.

(b) The duration of Course is 18 – 36 months.

The Course work will be taught in two semesters of 12 months while the student will spend the remaining 6 months in a training attachment and a project work.

43. DEPARTMENT OF PREVENTIVE AND SOCIAL MEDICINE

i. Master of Public Health (MPH) for MBBS graduates

ii. Master of Science in Public Health (MSc Public Health -MScPH) for other B.Sc in Science, Anatomy etc.

Admission Requirements:

The Programmes will be open to candidates who possess a first Degree in Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and other relevant courses allied to Medicine. In addition candidates must have at least three years post Degree experience and must have completed National Youth Service (NYSC) programme. Candidates for admission into the programme will undergo a selection process and only those who are successful will be admitted into the programme.

To serve the interest and needs of all Medical, Health and allied professions who desire the programme, there is need to simultaneously mount two separate programmes, one for medically qualified graduates and another for non-medically qualified professionals who wish to practice Public Health.

Requirements for Master of Public Health Programme:

(a) MBBS or its equivalent, with a minimum of three years post qualification experience.

(b) Candidates are also required to pass the qualifying examination.

Requirements for MSc Public Health Programme:

(a) B.Sc Honours in a health-related discipline with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division (22) Degree with CGPA not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or CGPA of 2.50 on a 4-point scale.

(b) Candidates are also required to pass the qualifying examination.

H. FACULTY OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES

44. DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOGNOSY & PHYTOTHERAPY

(i) M.Pharm and Ph.D Programmes

Requirements for M.Pharm

Candidates must possess a good first Degree in Pharmacy from the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University, not below Second Class Honours with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale. Non pharmacy graduates in closely related subjects like Chemistry, Biochemistry and Botany may be considered for admission. Such candidates may be required to take remedial undergraduate courses in Pharmacognosy as recommended by the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee.

Requirements for Ph.D

(i) Candidates who possess the M.Pharm Degree in Pharmacognosy of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized Universities, with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale. However candidates with CGPA of 3.00 in their M.Pharm or M.Sc Programmes in the Pharmacognosy or related disciplines may be considered for admission. Such candidates shall be required to take recommended 700 level/remedial courses which they must pass at an average score of 60% in the first year.

(ii) Candidates with M.Sc/M.Pharm Degree (minimum CGPA of 3.50); M.Phil Degrees in Pharmacognosy, Ethnomedicine, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Botany of the University of Port Harcourt or other approved Universities. Final selection of candidates is by presentation of a research proposal. Part-Time candidates will also be considered.

45. DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS AND

PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGY

(i) M.Pharm and Ph.D Programmes

Areas of Specialization for M.Pharm:

(a) M.Pharm in Pharmaceutics

(b) M.Pharm in Pharmaceutical Technology

Requirements for M.Pharm

Candidates must be graduates of Pharmacy from the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized Universities with at least a Second Class (Lower Division) or a declassified approved Degree Programme with evidence of good performance in pharmaceutics. Candidates shall be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Areas of Specialization for Ph.D

(a) Ph.D in Pharmaceutics

(b) Ph.D in Pharmaceutical Technology

Requirements for Ph.D

(i) A graduate of the University of Port Harcourt holding a Master’s Degree (M.Pharm) in the specialized field of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology with requirements as stated above for the M.Pharm Programme.

(ii) Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt holding a Master’s Degree as stated above in the requirements for M.Pharm who have obtained at least a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or an overall average of 60%(B) in the course work.

(iii) A graduate of any other recognized university who meets the above requirements shall be admitted on presentation of transcripts from the university. Candidates may be required to take relevant remedial courses as may be recommended by the Departmental and Faculty Graduate Committees.

46. DEPARTMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

Candidates must possess a B.Sc Degree from the University of Port Harcourt or from any other recognized University in any of these disciplines: Biological and Chemical Sciences including (Chemistry, Civil, Agricultural, Chemical and Environmental Engineering), Medical Sciences and Forensic Sciences.

Requirements for Ph.D

Candidates who obtained a minimum CGPA of 3.50 in the relevant written examinations and project on the M.Sc Course in Toxicology of the University of Port Harcourt, or any other recognized University.

47. DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL & MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY

Requirement for M.Sc Pharmaceutical & Medicinal Chemistry

Candidates must possess a B.Pharm or Pharm.D Degree of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved university. Candidates shall also satisfy the general requirements for admission into the postgraduate programme of the University of Port Harcourt.

I. CENTRE FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING (CENMERT)

(i) Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education

Requirments for PGD in Medical Education:

(a) The Programme will be open to candidates who possess a first degree in medicine, dentistry, the basic medical sciences, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, radiography, medical laboratory science, biochemistry, microbiology, veterinary medicine, biotechnology and any other medicine-related course that the College Academic Board shall determine subject to the approval of Postgraduate School. Aside from Medical and Dental graduates, whose certification is a ‘Pass’ requirement, other candidates must obtain a CGPA of not less than 3.00on a 5-point scale or 2.5 on a 4-point scale. In addition

(b) Graduates of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Port Harcourt, other graduates in related disciplines from University of Port Harcourt and graduates from other Universities approved by the Senate of University of Port Harcourt are eligible for admission into the programme.

(d) Candidates are required to undergo an aptitude test and oral interview.

(e) Current lecturers or those aspiring to lecture in medical and health-related courses are eligible to apply. However, having a current teaching position in a University will be an advantage.

(f) Admission into the programme shall be in accordance with the regulations and requirements of the University of Port Harcourt which may change from time to time.

(c) A Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum of 3.50 in Sports Science or related discipline, including Postgraduate Diploma in Basic Medical Sciences (Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology) and Human Kinetics and Health Education from a recognized University.

K. FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

All Engineering Ph.D programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale. Candidates would be required to attend an interview before admission and registration for the programme, and will be required to write a qualifying examination.

Requirements for Faculty of Engineering

1. PGD Programmes: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 3rd Class Honours in his/her choice of discipline or a minimum of 22 in any other related Engineering discipline.

2. M.Eng Programmes: Candidates must possess either a Bachelor’s Degree with minimum of Second Class Honours in the relevant Discipline, with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or PGD in the relevant areas with minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.
