Erelu Fayemi Advocates For Victims Of Sexual Harrassment In Ekiti State University

The wife of Ekiti State Governor and Chairperson of Ekiti State Gender Based Violence Management Committee, Erelu Fayemi has paid an advocacy visit to Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti to advocate for violence against female students and women in the University.

Erelu Fayemi who categorized Gender Based Violence to be physical, sexual and psychological said that conventional statistics put victims of one or a combination of those forms of violence at 1 out of 3 women.She explained thatGender Based Violence should be taken seriously as it erodes self-esteem and confidence of the victim, adding that GBV diminishes the capacity of women to fulfill their full potentials.

The Chairperson GBV Ekiti State urged the Authorities of Ekiti State University to adopt a zero tolerance approach to all forms of Gender Based Violence and promote a healthy culture devoid of fear and intimidation since women, who are victims of violent sexual crime are afraid to report for fear of stigma, blame and rejection.  Erelu Fayemi pleaded with EKSU leadership and students to acquaintthemselves with the provisions of the 2019 Ekiti State GBV law and encouraged security personnel to take GBV issues seriously.

The Governor’s wife also requested that the University Authorities make financial, materialand technical resources available for the fight against GBV and to give recognitionto the Gender Based Violence Support Club. 

She thereafter encouraged EKSU management to provide adequate accommodation for female students with a view to making them less vulnerable for GBV.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Edward Olanipekun appreciated the Governor’s wife and thanked her for the prompt attention given to EKSU female students. He promised that his administration would leave no stone unturned as the needful will be done to fulfill the requests of the Gender Based Violence Committee.
